Here at BARCS, we truly believe that every animal deserves a second chance. As an open-admission shelter, we take in every animal in need, no matter what the condition, circumstance or age. Some animals require extra medical treatments, attention and care during their stay with us—we call these special animals our “underdogs.” These unique underdogs (or undercats) come from a variety of backgrounds and situations. From animals requiring amputations to those abandoned at vacant homes or facing medical challenges above and beyond typical care, their stories reflect resilience and hope. Whatever it may be, BARCS is committed to helping them heal on their journey to find loving families. Meet Suzie and Stanley: Earlier this month, Baltimore City Animal Control brought Suzie and Stanley to BARCS after they were found all alone on an enclosed porch of a home. The home’s neighbors had noted that the owner had not been seen in quite some time and that they brought the dogs food and water. The police were called soon after and sadly found the homeowner deceased. When they first came to BARCS, Suzie and Stanley were so terrified and shut down that they would not even leave their kennels for walks. Staff and volunteers would find them curled into the corners of their kennels; they had to be reluctantly carried outside and then carried back inside. A veterinary exam found that 6-year-old Suzie had some small wounds on her legs, fly strikes, mild periodontal disease and enlarged mammary glands, but was otherwise healthy. 7-year-old Stanley also had periodontal disease, fly strikes and wounds, but his were more severe–the right side of his face was completely swollen and he was feverish. Both dogs were moved into offices with staff members while they received medical treatment to be comfortable and to decompress. They then went on to foster homes where they are continuing to receive care (and lots of love). Suzie and Stanley have come a long way since entering our doors, but they still have a healing journey ahead of them. They have made leaps and bounds with their ability to walk on a leash and are learning to trust new people. We are hopeful that they will find loving homes of their very own soon. We're committed to providing Suzie and Stanley with the care and love they need for as long as we're able. Your help and support makes a significant difference for them and every shelter animal at BARCS. BARCS' underdogs are privileged to have the support of The Nancy Sherertz Family Foundation on Giving Tuesday. This year, they have generously pledged to match all donations dollar-for-dollar up to $50,000 from now through Tuesday, December 3 to help care for more animals in need. During this matching opportunity, your $10 gift will become $20… $25 will become $50… $100 will become $200 and so on. 100% of your gift will be used to keep our promise to the underdogs in our shelter. |

Whether you love to draw, paint, sketch, or design digitally, we welcome all forms of creativity. Starting July 1st, we'll accept photo submissions until July 15th. Volunteers can sign up for multiple assignments, with artwork ideally completed by the end of July.

The proceeds go towards a fundraiser to save some dogs from Turks and Caicos that I’ve been trying to save for 6 months!! Peach and BD are two of the most loving, deserving dogs ever. I’ve spent 6 months loving and fighting for them. I have never once asked for donations or handouts from anyone. But I will continue to beg and plead for all of you to skip your coffee today and donate that $6 to save them. We are finalizing paperwork to get BD transported within the week. We’re getting ready for Plymouth Helping Hands for Animals’ annual Spring Fundraiser! This year it is a “Cinco de Mayo Line Dance Fiesta”! May 5th, 6 pm to 10 pm at American Legion Post 40 in Plymouth, MA. The wonderful Maureen Renie Godding will be our DJ and dance instructor. We will have some GREAT raffle prizes and lots of FUN! Thanks to the generous support of our HART friends, we are more than halfway to our goal of raising $30,000 in our 2022 Medical Procedures Fundraiser, which is just amazing! There is still work to be done, of course, and we have more cats requiring expensive medical care, like fun-loving, 1 year old guy, Marcus.
When this adorable, orange tabby arrived this Spring, he had a kitty cold (in medical terms, an Upper Respiratory Infection or URI), and he needed surgery on his eyes to fix a condition called entropion, in which the eyelids roll inward, painfully rubbing the eyes. Additionally, he was diagnosed with stomatitis (a painful condition caused by an autoimmune reaction to the teeth) and also a concerning lump at the base of his tail. Our veterinary partner at Gray-New Gloucester Animal Hospital helped us to resolve all of these issues and, aside from Marcus trying to pull his own stitches, all of his surgeries were very successful. He is struggling with the length of his recovery time (because he just wants to play!), and he has come up with the clever trick of dragging his e-collar across the door of his recovery cage to get our attention. Once he clears his adoption exam by our vet, he’ll be looking for his new home.
We understand times are tough this summer, between increased gas prices and general economic volatility, so this may not be the best time for you to give to HART. However, these same economic factors only increase our community's need for the work we do. We receive no public funding, and rely solely on the support of individual donors, foundations, and businesses, as well as our committed group of volunteers. Any amount that you can fit into your budget--whether $5, $10, $25, $100, or more--will get us that much closer to our $30,000 goal, and help us continue the work which is at the core of HART’s mission: “To provide refuge, comfort, and comprehensive medical attention for all of the cats that have been surrendered, abandoned, injured, or abused -- and to find appropriate community placements for them."

Billie was 25lbs over weight and couldn’t run when I adopted her. She had a rough life up until coming to the APCSM, and though she still has anxiety, she is the sweetest and most gentle dog. She just craves love and doesn’t mind Toey constantly jumping at her trying to play. With the extra weight off, she now can run, but really loves lounging around. She is my heart and I am so grateful I was the lucky one who got to adopt her and have her in my life”.

While she is looking better, she’s not out of the woods yet. Aside from being separated from mom a little too early, she’s battling respiratory issues and has an infected umbilicus and gums.
Our animal care team is working diligently to treat these ailments while also helping her hit milestones she would naturally reach in the wild.

We will be offering a Happy Holiday Pet Photo shoot during the upcoming Christmas in Edgartown Festival. 100% of every $25 Session fee will be donated to the Shelter (includes one dog, each additional dog, up to 3 total, is $10) . This price covers a mini (15 minute) pet portrait session and will include 3-5 images to choose from, one Social Media sized image perfect for online sharing.
Those who bring a bag of dog food to donate will also receive a complimentary voucher for a 5X7 portrait (Value $59). Additional products and portraits can be purchased as well. We will also be offering the chance to win a complimentary future Full Photo Session. (Value $250)

Daisy's Cat Rescue is relocating from CA to WV in September. Our move is costing about $5000 and we have been able to meet those expenses so far. But, funds saved for this purpose will be depleted once the car ships and all the animals coming along on the move are vetted, updated with vaccinations and given health certificates for flying on an airliner.
Anything now received in donations will be for living expenses for month of September, for me and the 5 rescues that are relocating with me.
